the view of Captain Farrell and Ike Judson. During those moments that Lucille had been in his arms, he had undergone a definite physical reaction, the sort of reaction that had made him burn in shame at times in the past because the sins of the flesh were just that—sins. A fellow just wasn't supposed to get like that around a decent girl. It wasn't proper.

But feeling that way while he was kissing Lucille hadn't seemed sinful or shameful at all. Instead, every instinct in his body had told him that this was right, this was the way it was supposed to be. It was almost. . . innocent... he decided.

And he couldn't help but wonder if maybe Lucille had felt the same way.

The LIGHTS of New Orleans fell away behind them. There was still an occasional yellow glow from the riverbank that marked an isolated cabin, or sometimes a brief scattering of lights that indicated a small settlement. The Zephyr was not the only boat on the river. A few other paddlewheelers, all of them similarly lit by torches, passed Captain Farrell's vessel. All the torches were set well away from the boats on the long iron poles, since the wood of which the vessels were constructed was highly flammable. An out-of-control fire was one of the worst things that could happen on a riverboat, worse even than a breach of the hull. If a hole wasn't too bad, it could be patched and the boat could be salvaged. A fire often burned a riverboat down to the waterline, totally destroying it.

Cory felt himself growing drowsy as the night passed. It seemed impossible that only twelve hours earlier, he hadn't yet encountered Struck for the second time. The third—and fatal—encounter had occurred only a few hours after that. So much had happened in such a short period of time.
